Don't give up

If you want to be successful, you have to keep going

In the last couple of weeks I have come across quite a few business people who feel like giving up. Times are pretty tough out there at the moment, and running your own business really isn’t easy, so I guess it’s not surprising that some people feel like giving up.

However, the secret of business success is NOT to give up. It’s not that successful people never feel low, or never have things go wrong, it’s simply that they pick themselves up afterwards and keep going. Now this isn’t always easy, so I’ve written a short guide with 7 top tips for not giving up. Here’s a summary of what’s in it:

1. Don’t give up
Keep saying to yourself that you’re not going to give up. Make it a mantra and repeat several times a day (when you’re feeling low).

2. See mistakes as learning opportunities
When you’ve made a mistake or had some disappointing news don’t take that as a sign that you’re a failure: analyse what happened, think about what you’ve learned, decide what you’re going to do differently next time and then move on.

3. Clear your mind
When you can’t see the wood for the trees, make a list of the things that you need to take care of, pick which one is most important and focus on that one for the next 2 weeks.

4. Remind yourself of your goal
You knew what you wanted to achieve when you started your business, so now that you’re a couple of years in, keep reminding yourself of that exciting end goal.

5. Celebrate all achievements
Don’t just wait until you’ve achieved it all, celebrate the small milestones as well. Look at how far you’ve come already and be proud of what you’ve done to get this far.

6. Take a step back
Become an independent observer of your own business. What would you say to you? What advice would you give? It’s often easy to advise others, so why not do it for yourself?

7. Take action
Move away from thinking/worrying about things, and start to take action, however small. Pick up the phone, write a letter or talk to someone, but take action. It will change your mindset and move you on to a solution.

    Hi Inge,
Having just started my own blog (, and trying to get my head around what you need to do to make a blog “work” I’d just like to say thank you for this post, and the encouragement it gave me. I’m not thinking of giving up, but some of my enthusiasm was wearing off!
    All the best,
