Business tips from Karren Brady and Deborah Meaden

I met two inspiring business women during this last month and I came away with plenty of notes and thoughts. There were two key points they made that were particularly wise, and I wanted to share these with you. For me they are crucial for business and personal success, and very much part of my philosophy.

Karren Brady (Vice Chairman of West Ham United FC and aide to Lord Sugar) has won all sorts of accolades, including being voted one of the 100 most powerful women in the world.

One of the most important things she said at the talk I heard, is that what makes a business successful is its staff. This ties in completely with my focus.

I’m a great believer that it’s people who make a business succeed or fail. For me, that’s why it’s so important to keep staff happy, motivated and engaged – and they will contribute to your success. There are many ways of doing this, and I talk about these in a number of my business guides (available on request).

Focus on people: they are the secret to your business success. There is no doubt too that others want to work for successful companies like these; they are inspiring.

Also on the theme of success, I heard from ‘Dragon’ Deborah Meaden, who ran a multi-million pound family holiday business. She was talking about success on a personal level, and I came away with her clear message – don’t have regrets, you can’t turn back the clock. You need to analyse what happened, learn from it and move on.

I believe in this absolutely. Successful people aren’t those who don’t make mistakes, they probably have more failures than many, but they’re not afraid of trying and giving things a go.

Deborah is very action orientated – and very successful. If you take action and keep on trying, you will eventually be successful; maybe not straight away but you just keep going.

Unsuccessful people give up and stop when they make a mistake or go wrong, and then they let that define their lives. The successful ones dust themselves off and carry on with what they have learnt.

Don’t give up; learn, and move on. Be confident, committed, focused, positive and persistent and success will have no choice but to come to you.
